As well as the vegan apple pie there are many other alternatives and options to enjoy at tea time. Firstly, this recipe is only one of many that exists. It can be done in different ways and styles.

This vegan apple pie recipe is one of the most traditional and easy. However, there are other recipes for apple pie that are more elaborate as if it were a cake. You can simply add vegan cream or buttercream to it and another layer of dough on top.

The vegan pie can also vary, depending on how the dough is prepared, or which fruit is chosen for the filling. In effect, instead of apples, this vegan pie can be made with red berries or apricot. Also, the species chosen may vary. You can avoid cinnamon, replacing it with clove, or changing the wine that is added with Mistela or Moscato. Other variant to the apple pie is the classic Welsh cake (which also has apples as the key ingredient, but in compote).

When preparing the vegan apple pie, the dough is the most important part. The non-vegan dough is generally made with flour, sugar, and butter. Replacing these ingredients for vega ones does not alter the flavour, but the pie will be much healthier! Feel free to play with different flours, to include whole grains in your baking.

You can even use gluten free flour! It is very important to let the dough pre-cook before putting the filling in so it gets golden crispy.

The mixture of a soft warm filling and the crispy dough is what makes apple pie crumble so special and delicious.

For the dough:
  • 2 cups of spelt flour
  • ½ cup of whole-wheat flour
  • 4 tbsp of iced cold water
  • 1 cup of cold margarine/ vegan butter cut in small cubes
  • 3 tbsp of cane or muscovado sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
For the filling:
  • 6/7 red apples
  • 2 tbsp of cornstarch
  • 1 pinch of nutmeg
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 tbsp of cinnamon
  • ⅓ cup of cane or muscovado sugar
  • 3 tbsp of Mistela or any dessert wine
  • Unsweetened almond milk (as required)

  1. For the dough: Mix all the dry ingredients (flour, water, and salt). Then, add the vegan butter and mix/knead with your hands while slowly adding the cold water as necessary to form the dough. Once ready, cover it with plastic wrap or put it in a bowl covered with a lid in the fridge for at least 40 minutes. This step is key as the dough needs to be cold when cooked.
  2. While you wait for the dough to get cold, start preparing the filling. Peel the apples, remove the seeds, and cut them into thin slices. Place the apples in a bowl with all the ingredients for the filling and mix well. Reserve and let them absorb the flavours. The cornstarch will make the pie crispy and create the crumble.
  3. Remove the dough from the fridge, roll it out on a baking tray previously greased and covered with a bit of flour. Once ready, poke the dough with a fork several times (this will prevent it from growing up) and place in the preheated oven on 180 degrees heat. Cook it for approximately 10/15 minutes.
  4. Once the dough is pre-cooked, add the filling on top of it, brush the pie with a little unsweetened almond milk and return to the oven cooking it for another 25/30 more minutes until the top is brown and crispy. Once the vegan apple pie is ready, remove it from the oven and let it cool down. The vegan apple pie is now ready to enjoy! Sprinkle it with icing sugar. It can be served with a scoop of vegan cream ice cream, which is extra delicious!
